Make a Difference at Ivans

Digital connectivity is the lifeblood of innovation. At Ivans, a division of Applied, we are at the heart of what is driving innovation across the entire insurance ecosystem. This is just one of the things that makes Ivans such a cool place to work. Making a difference – for the industry and within our team – is what pushes us to do better each day.

Our culture is about more than developing the best technology. It’s about being innovative, investing in our team, creating a customer-centric environment, and setting the industry up for the future.

Position Overview

We’re searching for a Staff Architect to join our Ivans Engineering team in a remote or hybrid location. To keep us headed in the right direction, we’re looking for people who understand winning is a team sport, who value and seek to learn from our team’s diverse experiences and backgrounds, who welcome a challenge and take risks in the pursuit of creating better outcomes for our customers, and who can, at any given time, step back to laugh and have some fun.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and evolve the architecture for core systems supporting Ivans Download and translation engines.
  • Lead the modernization of legacy Java applications, including updating codebases compiled against older JDKs and reworking outdated patterns into modular, testable, maintainable services.
  • Build and guide high-volume event- and batch-driven processing pipelines, ensuring robust handling of state, deduplication, idempotency, and downstream reporting integration.
  • Define and document patterns for message tracking, observability, and system-level logging to support both internal debugging and external transparency.
  • Consolidate disparate or bespoke implementations into shared, reusable service layers that improve scalability, testability, and onboarding for future developers.
  • Collaborate with engineers and architects to review designs, reinforce platform best practices, and ensure consistent architectural decisions across teams.
  • Drive refactoring efforts that migrate batch-based workflows to event-driven models where appropriate, balancing reliability, performance, and delivery guarantees.
  • Serve as a go-to technical authority for teams working in Java and Go, offering hands-on code reviews, mentoring, and architectural support

We’re Excited to Learn More About You

Your experience may include:

  • 10+ years of backend engineering experience with deep expertise in both Java and Go, including modern service design, performance tuning, and production support.
  • Demonstrated success upgrading legacy Java codebases (compiled under older JDKs) to modern JDK versions, and re-architecting them for modularity, testability, and maintainability.
  • Extensive Go development experience, including production use of Go for building scalable, event-driven systems and shared service components.
  • Strong understanding of event-driven architecture, including message ordering, deduplication, idempotency, error handling, and delivery guarantees across asynchronous systems.
  • Proven experience refactoring or replacing batch-oriented workflows with modern, event-driven equivalents – balancing reliability, observability, and downstream data needs.
  • A track record of consolidating fragmented or bespoke processes into cohesive, extensible codebases designed for long-term maintainability.
  • Deep familiarity with high-throughput transactional systems, including techniques for throughput optimization, graceful degradation, and system resilience under load.
  • Comfort working with observability and instrumentation stacks like Datadog, enabling traceability, system health monitoring, and root cause analysis.
  • A collaborative mindset with the ability to partner closely with engineering and product teams, influence architectural direction through documentation, design reviews, and hands-on contributions, and align shared practices across teams.
  • A solid foundation in cloud ecosystems such as GCP or AWS, with experience working with message queuing systems and distributed service orchestration
